Most modern websites cannot be properly viewed at low resolutions such as standard VGA, which is only 640 X 480 or even 800 X 600, which is known as SVGA.  XVGA or 1024 X 768 or higher is recommended for best viewing.  Many people inadvertently adjust their screen resolutions to low quality setting to make screen objects such as icons and scroll bars larger.  This is unfortunately the wrong thing to do because all of the screen elements in all Windows based operating systems can be adjusted independent of screen resolution.  So what should you adjust your screen resolution to to optimize viewing?  We recommend the following settings:

  • 14" and 15" monitors: 1024 X 768  by 256 colors (or higher) refresh rate should be set at 70hz or higher to obtain a flicker free screen.

  • 17" and 19" monitors: 1280 X 1024  by 256 colors (or higher) refresh rate should be set at 70hz or higher to obtain a flicker free screen.

  • 20" and 21" monitors: 1600 X 1200  by 256 colors (or higher) refresh rate should be set at 70hz or higher to obtain a flicker free screen.

Changing Screen Resolution

  • Step 1. Select "Start" in the lower left corner of your screen

  • Step 2. Select "Settings"

  • Step 3. Select "Control Panel"

  • Step 4. Double click on the "Display" icon.

  • Step 5. Click on the tab that says "Settings" (it's the top right tab)

  • Step 6.

    • Windows 95 users under the image of the monitor, on the right, you will see a section labeled "Desktop area", slide the bar so that the numbers read 800x600

    • Windows 2000 and Windows 98 users: Under the image of the monitor, on the right, you will see a section labeled "Screen area", slide the bar so that the numbers read 800x600.

    • Windows XP users: Under the image of the monitor, on the left, you will see a section labeled "Screen Resolution", slide the bar so that the numbers read 1024 by 768 or higher .

  • Step 7. Click on "Apply".

  • Step 8. Click on Ok in the dialogue box. Your monitor should change resolutions to 800x600. If the display looks incorrect, simply wait 15 seconds, and your OS will set the display back to its original setting.

Note: To change your resolution back, follow these directions except select 640x480 as your resolution.
